A Christmas for Giving

A Christmas for Giving
Sharing the joy of Christmas by giving to those affected by Hurricane Sandy
In Newfoundland over the next few weeks, many will be making preparations for Christmas celebrations with family, friends, and co-workers. Those in our homes and neighbourhoods will be blessed by generosity and love. No one will be unaffected by the presence of joy and sharing in the local community.
In Long Island, Statten Island, Brooklyn and Queen’s over the next few weeks, individuals and communities will be continuing their struggle to return to normalcy following the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Many are still without adequate access to electricity, clean water, and shelter. For them Christmas may be a time of scarcity and hopelessness. Families face grief, loss of home and community.
This Christmas, consider sharing your joy to neighbours in the New York Region.
The Parish of the Ascension and community partners are offering a Gala for those in Newfoundland to share Christmas with our neighbours to the south.
The Parish has linked with Churches in the New York Region, and will be sending funds so that families and neighbourhoods in New York can receive care, support, and the gift of Christmas.
The Gala includes a three-course dinner, silent auction, live auction, and performances by various local artists.
All proceeds raised will be given to those affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Dinner will be prepared by a team of prominent local chefs including,
Roary MacPherson, Mike Barsky, Andrea Maunder, Michelle Leblanc, Shaun Hussey, Brian Piercey, Angie Ryan, Jillian Lake, Thomas Canning and Hans Uebel.
A Christmas for Giving will take place Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at the CLB Armoury, St. John’s. Doors open at 6:00 pm and dinner will be served at 7:00 pm.
For more information contact David at 368-5693 or email aChristmasforgiving@gmail.com
Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased at the following locations:

Presentation Gala - September 23, 2012

What an evening !!! We performed with other local groups and soloists for a talent filled night that delighted the Presentation Sisters' many delegates from around the world. Jacinta Mackey entertained the audience between performances with trivia questions and prizes (sacred medals and pastel coloured rosary beads).
HHMAC closed the evening with three selections:
   - Why We Sing
   - Jack (Dr. Valerie Long arr.)
   - River in Judea

We were honoured to wrap up the evenings festivities with the Ode to Newfoundland and finally our treasured Holy Heart of Mary School Song.  What a way to kick of this year.

Next performance - Sing for Care.

Great News - Valerie receives Torch Bearer Award

Valerie with her Torch Bearer Award and HHMAC
Cape Spear, NL July 24, 2012
On Tuesday July 24, 11:30 am at Cape Spear National Park, the presentation of the Torch Bearer Award will be made to Dr. Valerie Long by the World Harmony Run organization, honouring her as this province's winner of this prestigious award and we invite you to attend and show her your support. "The Torch-bearer Award is an award which recognizes and honours individuals who have been of extraordinary inspiration and service to their communities". Valerie's work with HHMAC and Les MS is an indication of that inspiration to the community and we are proud to announce this award on her behalf.

The international run will conclude at Cape Spear as the torch is passed and with a ceremonial run of 2 km to the finish line, and runners who wish to join are also invited to participate. T-shirts will be provided to all runners. Please email mrebidoux@mun.ca to register for the run and give her your size for the shirt. This is a public event so spread the word to your friends and colleagues. Runners are asked to meet at Victoria Park Day Camp at 10:30 to receive their shirts and, if you wish, you will be driven to the site of the run and then returned to Victoria Park at the end of the ceremony (approximately 12:00-12:30).

You will find a link to profiles of this year's Canadian recipients of the Torch-bearer award here:
